Amazing Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used in health and skincare remedies since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality”. It is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family, which grows in dry climates such as Africa, India and some of the Caribbean Islands.

Aloe vera contains the hormones Auxin and Gibberellins, which both contain anti-inflammatory properties. Gibberellins also acts as a growth hormone, which stimulates cell regeneration and promotes fast healing.

Applying Aloe Vera to skin If you have ever applied Aloe right from the leaves onto your skin, then you know how cooling and soothing it feels. It works great to relieve dry itchy skin, especially after a sunburn. It serves to restore your skin’s natural moisture and also acts as a protective barrier against further damage.

As we age, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe vera leaves contain antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, which all help to improve the skin’s natural firmness and keep it hydrated.

Aloe vera is an excellent option for acne treatment too, as it contains anti-microbial properties. Not only will aloe vera help to prevent acne, but the anti-inflammatory properties will help to reduce skin inflammation caused by acne.

At SiSi Started It, we use aloe vera juice in all our lotions, cleansers, moisturizerstoners and hydrating mist. We feel it is simply a must have ingredient, instead of just distilled water, as it contains a plethora of beneficial properties.

Skincare Hype

There are so many cosmetic products available today that make quick fix or anti-aging claims. They tout must-have miracle ingredients discovered by the latest medical breakthrough. Unfortunately, these ingredients usually do not do what they claim, and any supporting research is carried out by the cosmetic company themselves (the industry is not regulated). Consumers trying to keep up with the latest trends end up spending far too much money and assemble a large collection of products they do not need. This marketing strategy definitely is skincare hype;  a tactful way for cosmetic companies to over-charge and dazzle the consumer without substantial evidence that their products even work. Often, these chemical laden products cause the problems they claim to fix. Read labels carefully and avoid synthetic chemical ingredients.

Is skin type also skincare hype? Skin changes and cannot really be pigeon holed into just one type. It is actually normal to have a T-zone which is often labelled as combination skin. Dry skin happens to all of us at sometime when our skin becomes dehydrated. Oily skin can result from dry skin trying to balance itself out with sebum production and, let’s be honest, blemishes do happen. By adopting a consistent routine and monitoring our skin, we can manage what it needs and when. Avoid those quick fix, medicated products that do more harm then good, and never get to the root of the problem. Often our current skin type is directly linked to our current lifestyle. Take a holistic approach to over all health, have more control over your own skin and steer clear of the skincare hype!

Basic Skincare Steps by SiSi Started It

Skincare Routine

Adopting a daily skincare routine and sticking with it will show positive results. Always think of the products we choose as food for the skin; and natural is essential. Beauty really is skin deep when it comes to a radiant complexion. I’m sure you already know the basic steps to a healthy skincare routine, just like we know a balanced diet, exercise and plenty of sleep is good for us! The trick is consistency. Not everyone needs every step every day, but there are some guidelines to help you figure out what will work best for you.

CLEANSE: The first step in your daily skincare routine. Be sure to cleanse your skin twice a day, even if you do not wear much make-up. Oils in cleansers actually attach to dirt molecules and rinsing carries them away. Removing dirt and sweat etc. keeps the pores from becoming clogged. In a later blog we will discuss the benefits of double cleansing.

TONE: Using a toner after cleansing will rebalance the PH factor of your skin. Also toners will remove any cleansing residue, tighten pores and prepare the skin for moisturizing. Never use a toner with alcohol as it will dry out the skin, which throws off natural sebum production.

MOISTURIZE: Environmental factors like sun, wind, heat and cold effect of our skin. Using moisturizer will provide nourishment and hydration. It is important to replace moisture loss even on blemish prone and oily skin. This should always be part of your daily skincare routine.

EXFOLIATE: Removing dead skin cells and toxins from the outer layer of skin will keep it looking smooth and vibrant. It is not necessary to exfoliate more than once or twice per week, and a gentle mask or super fine exfoliate will get the job done gently and effectively.

The Skin

Skin Structure

The skin is made up of several different components, including water, protein, lipids and different minerals and chemicals. Skin changes constantly throughout your life for better or for worse. Skin regenerates itself about every 27 days. Proper care is essential to maintain skin health and vitality.

Skin’s Purpose

The primary function of the skin is to act as a barrier against outside elements and germs. The skin acts as a regulator for body temperature via sweat, hair and circulation. It also converts ultraviolet rays into Vitamin D. It functions as a sensory organ with a network of nerve cells which respond to touch, heat and cold. The skin assists with excretions of salt, urea, water and toxins via sweat.

Skin Integrity

When skin has integrity, it is whole, intact and undamaged; it is our external fabric. The skin truly is a mirror of our inner self. We can achieve skin that effectively reflects our inner beauty when we care for it with products that cleanse, nourish, pamper and protect. The products we use on a daily basis are food for our skin. Natural ingredients provide nourishment in the form of vitamins and minerals and support the lipid barrier with essential fatty acids.

Fatty acids are vital components of living cell membranes. They are calorie-rich nutrients that skin cells convert into energy and contribute to regeneration and membrane fluidity. Fats can be classified by molecular size: short, medium and long chain. The shorter the chain, the more quickly they absorb into skin; carrying with them nutrients and therapeutic ingredients. Coconut oil and cocoa butter are examples of short chained molecules which are quickly turned into energy prompting cells to burn fats, speeding up cellular metabolism which assists in maintaining optimum health. Long chain fatty acids are richly nutritious and moisturizing, alleviating dryness and strengthening cell structure and thus cell tissue.

The Beauty of Natural Skincare

Let’s face it, we all want beautiful skin! We buy all kinds of creams, lotions and potions, trying to keep up with the latest trends. Sometimes we even spend exorbitant amounts of money looking for that quick fix for our current skin ailment. Shopping in a cosmetics department can be overwhelming, never mind confusing, with so many choices available to us. Well guess what? Skincare does not have to be complicated or expensive! Natural skincare can be an affordable way to beautiful skin.

If you haven’t already started reading labels and being careful about the products you use on your skin, it’s time to start. Actually a fresh start is exactly what we are focusing on at SiSi Started It. We will be launching our new website in the next few weeks. Our goal is not only to provide consumers with an alternative to mainstream cosmetics, but to educate on the lifelong benefits of choosing natural skincare. Since this is our first blog we want to start at the beginning and get back to our roots (pun intended).

Natural ingredients come from plants, flowers, herbs, fruits, nuts and vegetables; in other words, living things which contain a vital life force. Wether you adhere to this thought process or not, it cannot be disputed that big cosmetic companies try to replicate natural ingredients synthetically. Unfortunately imitations of these ingredients fall short. In fact, petroleum by-products, which are widely used in cosmetics as anti-aging ingredients, may actually promote aging! Throw artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes into the mix and you end up with a toxic concoction. Our ancestors had it right; all we need to sustain health and wellness can be found in nature. This is especially true for skincare.

Toxins build up in our bodies over the years, and when an imbalance occurs we are overcome by disease. Just as harmful chemicals can be absorbed into our system through our skin, so can beneficial natural ingredients. So along with our skin benefitting from natural skincare, so does our whole body, mind and soul.

Tips To Remember:

The purpose of natural remedies is to assist the body in maintaining an optimal level of health. Healthy skin does not happen overnight with the latest miracle cream. It is better to care for our skin in a preventative manner, rather than a reactive one. Adopting a simple affordable skincare routine, with products that are soothing and nourishing, will promote clear radiant looking skin over time.

As with all things, a healthy lifestyle will show on our skin. To put your best face forward remember to:

• Drinks lots of water
• Get plenty of sleep
• Exercise each day
• Eat a balanced diet
• Find ways to manage stress
